Allegheny County man sentenced to life without parole in Ohio man’s murder

Daniel C. Lloyd

An Allegheny County man was sentenced Thursday, June 20, to serve a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole for the June 2022 death of an Ohio man in Muddy Creek Township.

Daniel C. Lloyd, 21, of Pitcairn, was sentenced to life without parole after a jury convicted him in May of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first degree murder in the June 21 drug-related shooting death of Frederick Orr, 32, of Columbus.

A co-defendant who testified against Lloyd has been sentenced to serve 9 to 20 years in prison.

Butler County Common Pleas Court Judge Timothy McCune imposed the sentence after Orr’s grandfather called for the maximum sentence and commended the county’s criminal justice system for holding Lloyd responsible for his grandson’s death.

Dwight Orr said his grandson was a human being despite what he was doing at the time, and the person who took his life should get the maximum penalty.

“I fought for this country, and I’m proud of how the system worked,” Dwight Orr said. “I wouldn’t want the cops chasing me. They were relentless.”

He spoke to Lloyd, who participated in the hearing remotely from the county jail, where he has been held without bail since his arrest in September 2022.

“You should feel the justice,” Orr said. “He carried my name and you put him in the dirt.”

He said Frederick was his firstborn grandchild.

Lloyd didn’t speak before he was sentenced.

A victim impact statement written by Frederick Orr’s younger sister was read aloud by a victim’s advocate from the district attorney’s office.

Lloyd’s court-appointed attorney, Joseph Scioscia III, said he would file post sentence motions on Lloyd’s behalf, but added that he doesn’t handle appeals to higher courts and asked McCune to appoint a new attorney to represent Lloyd in his appeals.

According to testimony from the weeklong trial last month, Lloyd hid in the back of an SUV owned and driven by co-defendant Nicole Schwartz, 39, of Ellwood City, when she picked up Orr after he was released from the county prison on June 10, 2022, and shot Orr early June 11.

Orr’s body was found with three gunshot wounds — two in the back and one in the back of his head — along Kelly Road between East Portersville and Yellow Creek roads.

Schwartz, the prosecution’s main witness, testified she ran drugs for Orr but used the crack cocaine and spent the $3,000 he stashed before he went to prison, and she began a relationship with Lloyd.

Prosecutors argued that Lloyd wanted to replace Orr as a drug dealer in Butler.

Schwartz pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit third-degree murder and was sentenced to serve 9 to 20 years in state prison followed by five years of probation for her role in the murder.
