Auction supports 4-H youth activities

Bids usually very generous

While the Butler Farm Show is where many county 4-H members auction off their own livestock, many of those same members have spent the time since the August event gathering donations to auction off at the group’s annual fundraiser in October.

Amy Metrick, Butler County 4-H educator, said the auction is one of the biggest fundraisers for the 4-H group. The members gather and even create items to put up for auction, which can include a variety of things from crafted items to baked goods to gift cards that cover the cost of activities.

“In the past, we've had like 150, 160 items, sometimes a little less or sometimes a little more,” Metrick said. “We also give gift cards to restaurants and museums, Keystone Safari and things like that.”

The Butler County 4-H auction will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the East Butler Volunteer Fire Company hall, 800 Grant Ave. The event is free to attend. Metrick said people who attend the auction can register to get a bidder number, and they make their payments at the end of the night.

While some of the items at the auction are homemade goods, Metrick said the people at the auction are generous with their bids when it comes to helping out the 4-H club.

“We have a family that makes pumpkin rolls, and a pumpkin roll will go for over $100,” Metrick said. “Our cider sells for two- to three-times what it sells for in the market.”

Metrick said money raised through the auction goes back into the club, to help members pay fees that come with 4-H activities.

“We're able to pay different registration fees when kids go to camps or events, and that's what these funds are used for,” Metrick said.
