High school sports roundup: North Catholic, Mars girls soccer qualify for PIAA tournament

Andrew Malichky scored one goal and assisted on another in Seneca Valley’s 4-2 win over Thomas Jefferson in ice hockey action Thursday at Ice Castle Arena.

The Raiders were up 2-0 — thanks to goals from Owen Martin and Jameson Halin — when TJ responded with a pair of goals to tie the game early in the third period.

Malichky and Braden Morin then capped the scoring to seal the win for SV (4-0).

Carter Hoehn had two assists and Matthew Gilchrist made 13 saves in the victory.

North Catholic will be competing in the Class 2A state playoffs thanks to a 5-1 win over South Park in a WPIAL consolation game played at Hampton High School’s Fridley Field.

North improved to 16-4 on the season.

Mars 1, Plum 0 — Meredith Ashbaugh scored in overtime as the Planets extended their season by winning the WPIAL Class 3A consolation game at North Allegheny’s Newman Stadium.

The Planets (18-3) will begin the state playoffs Tuesday against the District 10 champion.
