Cranberry supervisors approve solicitation ordinance changes

Cranberry Township supervisors have approved several modifications to the township’s solicitation ordinance.

One of those changes, approved at a meeting Thursday, Nov. 21, involved relaxing some of the regulations regarding when solicitation is permitted. After previously being outlawed, the township will now allow solicitation on Sundays and on holidays recognized by the state.

“After a review of the law, we do need to allow for soliciting on Sundays and holidays,” township manager Dan Santoro said.

It still will be unlawful for any person, firm, corporation or association to sell or offer any goods or services or solicit funds or donations in public spaces or by going house-to-house between the hours of 9 p.m. and 10 a.m.

The other significant amendment added tiered penalties for any entity that violates Cranberry’s “do not knock” list, which provides residents with the opportunity to reject most forms of solicitation at their addresses.

Solicitation licensees who are notified of that list and commit two violations at an address listed on the do not knock list or solicit during prohibited hours will have their license revoked.

“What we’re doing is upping the enforcement remedies available to the police department when solicitors violate that do not knock list,” Santoro said.

The township’s do not lock list is purged every year on Dec. 31, and residents must register annually if they want to remain on the list, which excludes them from the sale of goods, commodities or services, but does not prohibit political canvassing.

The new enrollment period for 2025 began Nov. 1. Residents can sign up through the township’s website.

The regulations passed Thursday go into effect Sunday, Dec. 1.
