Chief: Unusual fire in Zelienople home’s roof needed fought from the inside out
Heavy winds overnight tore flashing off a house at East Grandview Avenue in Zelienople, causing it to hit a power line and spark a fire on the house’s roof at around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5.
The responding fire companies were able to get the fire controlled relatively quickly, keeping damage contained to the roof and preventing anyone from being injured in the fire.
Doug Pickett, deputy chief of Harmony Fire District, said it took about a half hour to get the fire under control, but the unusual cause of the fire meant it had to be fought a little unusually.
“They had to get attic ladders and spray from the inside out,” Pickett said. “Due to the power lines, it took us some time to get aerial. They held fire to the edge of the roof, so there was very little extension.”
Pickett said a neighbor called 911 to report the fire, after not being able to make contact with the homeowner. Crews on scene did find the homeowner, and he was displaced Thursday morning.
However, Pickett said the damage being contained to the roof meant he would probably be able to return to the house soon.
In addition to the Harmony district firefighters, also responding to the scene were Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company, Callery Volunteer Fire Company, Adams Area Fire District, Evans City Volunteer Fire Department, Big Knob Volunteer Fire Department and Franklin Township in Beaver County.
