2 men sentenced to prison in separate cases

Two men were given prison sentences Thursday in separate cases in Butler County Common Pleas Court.

Derrick L. Hart, 56, of Pittsburgh, was sentenced to serve 18 to 36 months in state prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of escape.

Butler County detectives said he cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet April 2, 2023, in Butler while he was on house arrest.

In an unrelated case, Timothy E. Swaney, 54, of Butler was sentenced to serve six to 18 months in the county prison, pay fines totaling $300 and pay $48 in restitution to Ace Hardware after pleading guilty to theft and other charges filed by Butler Township police in two cases.

Swaney was charged with felony retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft in October 2023, and felony retail theft and a summary charge of defiant trespass in April this year.

In the 2023 case, he was sentenced to concurrently serve two terms of six to 18 months in prison and pay a $150 fine and the restitution. In the 2024 case, he was sentenced to serve six to 12 months in prison. The sentences are concurrent to each other.

Both men were sentenced by Judge Joseph Kubit.
