No white Christmas expected for Butler County this year

Butler will not be dreaming of a white Christmas this year, though its residents can expect chilly temperatures on Christmas Day.

Some snow will come through the southern portion of Butler County into the early hours of Christmas Eve, though the odds of Christmas Day snow are not likely.

“We do have a little bit of snow through the 23rd, maybe an inch or so around Butler further south down into Allegheny County,” said Bill Modzelewski with the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh.

Modzelewski said there could be some slick roads into Christmas Eve, and precipitation will taper off in the morning.

The odds of a white Christmas vary around Western Pennsylvania. According to the National Weather Service, Pittsburgh and surrounding neighborhoods have had a 30% chance of seeing snow on Christmas Day since 1990. Meanwhile, other areas, such as north of Interstate 80 and the Laurel Highlands, have had higher odds.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s white Christmas probability map has shown that since 1990, Butler County’s odds of receiving at least an inch of snow on Christmas Day range from 25% to 40%.

For Christmas Day, Butler will see a high temperature near 38 degrees, with a nighttime low around 27. The chance of precipitation is only around 20%, with cloudy conditions expected.

“It looks like there will be quite a bit of cloud coverage on Christmas Day,” Modzelewski said. “Precipitation is not expected.”

In the days following Christmas, temperatures will start to slightly warm up around Butler.

AAA spokesperson Jim Garrity previously told the Butler Eagle this holiday season would be one of the most heavily traveled ever. Around Butler, travelers can expect the days after Christmas to be a little warmer, as well as relatively dry.

There will be a 50% chance of rain Saturday night, with temperatures Sunday reaching 50 degrees.

“Right now, it looks like it should be mostly dry following Christmas. Through Friday, it looks like we should not have any precipitation until after the weekend. It should get closer to the 50s once we get through this week,” Modzelewski said.
