Evans City man charged with strangling wife’s son

State police charged an Evans City man after he allegedly strangled his wife’s son, according to court documents.

State Police in Butler charged Robert Joseph Guthrie, 41, with felony strangulation, two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and two summary counts of harassment in connection with the Jan. 17 incident, according to the criminal complaint.

Police responded to an domestic incident and spoke with Guthrie’s wife. She told police she had found pornography on Guthrie’s phone, and the two began arguing, which escalated when Guthrie became physical.

Police said the wife’s son attempted to separate the two, but then Guthrie placed two hands around his neck and began choking him against a wall while he was unable to breathe.

Police said they observed red marks on the front and sides of his neck consistent with being choked.

Guthrie’s preliminary hearing is scheduled at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, with District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz.
