Man charged with forgery, identity theft for using fake checks
Cranberry Township Police have charged a man who allegedly attempted to cash fraudulent checks using stolen identities at various Western Pennsylvania banks.
Luis Anthony Cuascut, 63, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged with two counts of felony forgery, one count each of felony identity theft and using a counterfeit access device, and misdemeanor cashing bad checks.
Police apprehended Cuascut on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at First Commonwealth Bank in Cranberry Township after he presented a fabricated check to the teller for $657.34 made payable to Harry S. Philips Jr.
Police said Cuascut presented the check with Philips’ forged signature and a fake Pennsylvania driver’s license with Cuascut’s photo but Philips’ information. He was arrested by Ross Township Police later the same day for attempting to cash additional forged checks using stolen identities. Police determined he had been doing this in several other states.
Cuascut’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, with District Judge Kevin J. Flaherty.
