Cranberry supervisors approve Green Light-Go grant applications

CRANBERRY TWP — Township supervisors approved Green Light-Go Program grant applications for two different projects during a meeting Thursday, Feb. 6.

The first of those projects relates to the installation of fiber-optic signal communications on Rochester Road from Haine School Road to Powell Road to improve traffic signal communication and coordination.

Officials requested $83,500 and would provide matching funds of $21,000, or 20%, bringing the total cost to $104,500.

“That’s one of the links we don’t have in the township,” said township manager Dan Santoro of the reasoning behind the application. “Most of the signals up and down (Route) 19, (Route) 228, and Freedom Road are all connected, so we’re trying to connect another portion of the system to a signal that’s not connected.”

The other request was made with similar intentions as officials seek to better manage traffic flow in other areas of the township.

Township staff pinpointed three lights in need of signal detection upgrades. Those included the lights at Franklin Road and Peters Road, Rochester Road and Graham Park Drive, and Rowan Road and Rowan School.

That request was for $96,000, with the township supplying $24,000, or 20%, for a total cost of $120,000.

“The second one is a preemption upgrade,” added Santoro. “Those are some of the oldest preemption equipment that we have in the township in signals, so we’re trying to get those upgraded to current standards.”

Township officials will be informed later this year if the grant applications are accepted.

Additionally, supervisors authorized a grant application to the Butler County Parks and Recreation Commission that would provide funds for the renovation of basketball equipment at Graham Park.

The estimated project cost would be $15,000 and would most notably go toward installing more traditional backboards on the basketball hoops.

In other business, supervisors approved a purchase approval amendment for the township’s newest fire engine.

An extra $29,861 was added to outfit the truck with the latest equipment, bringing the total cost to $780,603.

Finally, supervisors approved new site furniture for the Armstrong Great Lawn from Keystone Ridge Design, via a Co-Stars cooperative contract, for $61,192.
