Frigid weather, more snow ahead for Butler County this week
Butler County is under a cold weather advisory from the National Weather Service, which took effect at 10 p.m. Monday night and lasts until 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, Feb. 18.
On three straight days — Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 17 through 19 — temperatures are expected to dip below 10 degrees during the night. With wind-chill factor included, temperatures will fall below zero Monday night through Tuesday night.
In addition to Butler County, the advisory covers all or parts of eight other counties, including Clarion, Jefferson, Indiana, Armstrong, Westmoreland, Fayette; Preston, W.Va.; and Tucker, W.Va.
“Right now, we're looking at high temperatures in the upper teens for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,” said Andrew Kienzle, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. “We're advising caution. Make sure to cover exposed skin. Make sure to protect your pets and keep them indoors.”
These aren’t the coldest temperatures that Butler County will have seen so far in 2025. According to NOAA data, temperatures in the wider Pittsburgh area reached as low as 9 degrees below zero on Jan. 22.
No precipitation is expected Tuesday through Thursday, after a fresh layer of snow was dumped on Butler County over the weekend.
“We have a dry couple of days, which is welcome,” Kienzle said. “The snow has moved out and the cold has moved in to replace it.”
Forecasts for Thursday, Feb. 20 call for a chance of snow as high as 70%, and temperatures ranging from a low of 8 to a high of 21 degrees. However, Kienzle doesn’t anticipate very much snow will accumulate outside of the high-altitude areas.
“It looks like we'll get totals of about half an inch,” Kienzle said. “We're not expecting much accumulation.”
