Cranberry Township supervisors approve DCNR grant application

CRANBERRY TWP — Township supervisors approved the submission of an application for a Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant at an agenda preparation meeting on Thursday, March 27.

The application aims to acquire up to $300,000 for a grant that would help fund the township’s Community Park North Master Plan.

That plan details efforts to add and relocate several sand volleyball courts. Additionally, officials are seeking to add more parking, including accessible parking, around the park’s amphitheater.

A new restroom facility along with improvements to existing parking spaces, sidewalks and basketball courts are part of the plan, which has an estimated construction cost of $600,000, according to township manager Dan Santoro.

When the application is formally submitted, township officials will have to wait several months before finding out how much the grant could be worth.

“At best, the grant probably won’t be announced till this fall,” Santoro said.

Whether the township receives the full $300,000 or anywhere close to that number is unclear at this point. No matter what the amount would be, the township would match the number and then determine the best way to finance the remaining portion of the project.

Depending on how that process shakes out, the earliest timeline for construction to get underway is sometime in 2026, according to Santoro.

Other areas of Community Park North will soon be under construction as well.

In a different project at the park, officials received $2.8 million from a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to construct two and a half “soccer-sized multipurpose fields” at the township’s community park.

That project will also involve the construction of new restroom facilities near those fields.

At a meeting next Thursday, supervisors will be asked to consider a $27,300 contract with KATR Architecture for the design of those restrooms.
