Police: New Castle man prompts pursuit through multiple counties after stealing vehicle in Harrisville
State police raced through multiple counties Saturday, March 29, attempting to stop a New Castle man in a stolen vehicle, according to charges filed Monday, March 31.
Thomas A. Reed Jr., 38, is accused of stealing a white 2018 Chevrolet Silverado from Harrisville before leading police on a chase that spanned multiple counties, including portions of southern Butler County, police said.
Reed was charged with felony theft related to the stolen vehicle. Police said the vehicle owner tracked the vehicle traveling from Ohio to Sharon in Mercer County before it was spotted on a license plate reader.
Shortly before 9:30 a.m., police spotted the vehicle traveling eastbound on Mitchell Road in Neshannock Township, Lawrence County.
Police said Reed accelerated through the intersection of Mitchell Road and Route 18 prompting a chase that traveled through New Castle, Taylor Township and Ellwood City before traveling into Beaver County via Route 288.
Police said when Reed entered Zelienople from Beaver County, he abruptly swerved and narrowly missed a Zelienople police officer, who was attempting to deploy spike strips. The pursuit was terminated just south of Zelienople when Reed’s identity was confirmed, police said.
The vehicle was later observed entering the turnpike in Cranberry Township before it was abandoned in Harmar Township, Allegheny County. Police said Reed was arrested later by Pittsburgh city police in an unrelated incident and found to be in possession of the stolen vehicle’s key.
Reed is facing charges, filed March 29, of felony retail theft, misdemeanor receiving stolen property and misdemeanor false identification in Allegheny County.
Reed is being held in Allegheny County Jail until his extradition to Lawrence County Jail, police said, where he faces numerous charges related to the alleged chase.
His preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
