Springdale’s Kobe Phillippi named Mars boys basketball head coach, replacing Rob Carmody
Kobe Phillippi will take over Mars’ boys basketball program.
The Mars Area School Board approved Phillippi for the post during Tuesday’s meeting. He takes over for longtime coach Rob Carmody, who stepped down Aug. 28 because of his full-time job.
Phillippi was the coach at Springdale High School in Allegheny County before accepting Mars’ job. He took over the Dynamos during the pandemic, ahead of the 2021-22 season. He previously served as an assistant coach at West Allegheny.
He led the Dynamos to a 34-33 record over three seasons, including 14-8 (5-7 Class 2A, Section 3) last season. Springdale made the WPIAL Class 2A tournament in 2022 as an eight seed, bowing out in the first round.
He will have big shoes to fill.
Carmody coached the Planets for 26 years and won 408 games, turning the program into a perennial WPIAL playoff team (17 straight appearances) that won WPIAL titles in 2018 and 2019 and made the PIAA championship game in 2016 and ’18.
A call Tuesday evening to Mars athletic director Zach Matusak was not returned before publication.
The 2024-25 PIAA basketball season tips off Nov. 29. The Planets open play Dec. 3 at home against North Allegheny.
Phillippi will make $7,829 this season, according to the school board agenda.
