Seneca Valley boys basketball weathers another loss waiting for top player Tyler Pepin’s return

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley’s boys basketball team must feel like it’s been playing with one arm tied behind its back.
That analogy can’t be too far from the truth since the Raiders have been taking the court without their best player in Tyler Pepin.
The senior guard has yet to see action this season due to a sprained right ankle suffered late last month. SV is 1-4 without him after dropping a 63-47 decision at home to Peters Township on Monday.

“I sprained my left ankle over the summer, but it’s basically 100%,” Pepin said. “But the right, I was hoping to be cleared to play tonight, but it didn’t happen. I’m hoping to be back for our first section game (Friday at Fox Chapel).”
Pepin led the Raiders in scoring last year with 15 points per game, but his absence takes away much more from the team’s lineup.
“He’s our leader, an all-section player,” SV coach Kevin Trost said. “He can rebound, is one of two really good ball-handlers on the team and is tough on defense, can guard one through five.”
The Raiders’ task Monday was made even more difficult with starting point guard Andrew Omasits unable to go due to an illness. SV still managed three players in double figures in points, led by Nico Santapau’s 15, but it never recovered after falling behind 16-9 in the first quarter.
“Tyler checks a lot of boxes and it’s tough without him, but other guys are getting opportunities and hopefully that will lead to depth as the season goes on,” Trost said.
Owen Congdon added 11 points and Jaxon Householder 10 in the loss.

Pepin’s competitiveness and passion for the game is very visible when he’s on the floor. Having to watch from the bench during SV’s first five games has been difficult for him.
“I’m doing my best to help the team, like another coach on the bench,” he said. “I am a very emotional player and just want to get back on the court.”
The Raiders play another non-section game Tuesday at South Fayette.
