Shapiro, PennDOT highlight 2024 road projects
Gov. Josh Shapiro highlighted 63 projects completed this year in PennDOT District 10, which includes Butler County, that featured nearly 200 miles of road paving and replacing or fixing 130 bridges.
In District 10’s Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana and Jefferson counties, PennDOT completed 190 miles of paving, 386 miles of seal coating, nearly 1,000 miles of shoulder cutting, and replacing or rehabilitating 130 state-owned bridges.
In Butler County, $18.5 million in widening, drainage and intersection improvements included new turn lanes and new traffic signals on Freedom Road from the Beaver County line to Haine School Road in Cranberry Township. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
The $18.7 million safety enhancement project on the Route 68 corridor in Butler and Connoquenessing townships included a signal replacement, turn-lane installation and corridor improvements to reduce congestion from Stevenson Road to the intersection of Meridian Road and Benbrook Road. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
The $55.8 million safety improvement project on Three Degree Road in Adams and Middlesex townships included new through and turn lanes, new service roads, new jug handles, drainage, guardrail updates, signal enhancements, sidewalks, ramps and two roundabouts. The project is expected to be completed in November 2026.
The $19.2 million safety improvement project along Franklin Road in Cranberry Township included shoulder widening, rumble strip installation and sight distance improvements from the intersection of Route 228 north to about Peters Road. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2027.
Two bridges were replaced on Kline Avenue and Mars Evans City Road in Callery and Adams Township at a cost of $4.5 million. Work on the Kline Avenue bridge near the Mars Evans City Road intersection was completed in 2024. Work on the Mars Evans City Road bridge near the intersection with Kline Avenue will begin and is expected to be completed in 2025.
Statewide, 5,385 miles of road improvements included 1,941 miles of paving, work advanced on 401 state and locally owned bridges, and 356 contracts for highway, bridge and other improvement projects were completed.
