CANONSBURG — It was no walk in the park for Butler's Santino Sloboda, but winning a WPIAL title was a lot easier this time around.
He dominated Trinity's Dom Canali in the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Individual Wrestling Championships 127-pound final Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School, moving his record this season to 41-0 by technical fall in the third period.
A year ago, Sloboda pulled a reversal with just four seconds remaining to upset Norwin's Landon Sidun, who was ranked No. 1 in the nation, to earn the championship.
"I was expected to lose last year and win this year, so it's a different feeling," Sloboda said. "I don't know much about (Canali), but my goal this year is just to score as many points as I can and not worry about my opponents."

Two takedowns in the first period gave control to Sloboda, and the junior was never threatened.
He was one of three Butler County wrestlers to advance to the PIAA Southwest Regional Tournament, scheduled back at Canon-McMillan starting Friday. Butler's Kase Chopp was runner-up at 145 pounds, and Mars' Liam Hein was sixth at the same weight.
Sloboda did find himself in an unfamiliar position earlier in the day. In a semifinal bout against Indiana's Carter Putt, Sloboda was taken down for the first time this season. The latter was up 15-6 at the time and went on to win by major decision.
"This was the third straight year that Santino entered the final undefeated," Butler coach Scott Stoner said. "Sometimes a kid is so dominant, you lose track of some things and then someone mentions to you that he was taken down for the first time.
"He was very dominant here. Next week is going to include some wrestlers from different areas, but we're hoping for the same."
Sloboda is now 119-6 in his career. He will be looking for his effort at regionals to earn him a third trip to the state tournament. He has finished fourth and sixth there the last two years.
He credits his time with Quest Wrestling as a source for his improvement, though he was 40-3 as a freshman.
"The kid who finished second at 133 today (Latrobe's Luke Willochell), he's my main partner there, and I've gotten a lot of work in with him.
"When I'm wrestling, I'm having fun," he said. "That's one of the reasons for my success. I practice pretty much every day, I love the sport that much."

Chopp gets revenge, silver
Going 1 for 2 will earn Chopp a much better seed at regionals.
He had back-to-back bouts against wrestlers who had defeated him earlier this year. In the semifinals of the 145-pound bracket, he defeated Bethel Park's Ethan Higgins before coming up short by technical fall against Baldwin's Ramil Islamov, who is now 41-0 on the season with 19 pins.
Chopp fell to Islamov 10-1 at the Southmoreland Tournament in late December.
"I knew how good he is and all the moves he has," Chopp said. "I tried to combat them, but he is so dominant. After he beat me 10-1, he's beaten everybody by pin or tech fall.
"I wasn't looking forward to regionals much until I lost here today. It's going to motivate me."
Chopp is now 40-7. His 4-2 victory against Higgins avenged a 6-4 loss at the start of the season.
"There's a bit of a letdown there," Stoner said. "You get to the final and have hopes of doing well, but it was a great effort by Kase just to get there."

Third time’s the charm for Hein
Hein came away from his two previous trips to districts empty handed but was determined to make the podium as a senior.
His wins over Max Formaini, of Armstrong, and Devin Junko, of Trinity, assured him of a medal (top eight) and advancing (top seven). Losses to Franklin Regional's Max Firstine and Canon-McMillan's Mason Calgaro dropped him to sixth.
"I was lackluster in the gym last year, did not work as hard as I could have," he said. "I lifted a lot over the past year, and that has made a big difference for me. I'm excited about moving on.
"When I'm on the mat, I'm not just out there for me, I'm wrestling for my family, my school and my coaches. I have a great support system."
Mars coach Ben Rings believes Hein (38-12) still has room to improve.
"He wrestled his heart out, and over the next few days we're going to get back in the room, look at what he did well and other things that he could do a little better. I think we can turn some of his losses into wins."
Rest of the field
Butler sophomore Nick Savannah medaled by placing eighth, missing out on advancing by one place. His day began with a 4-0 decision over Shaler's Anthony Jones, then dropped bouts to Moon's Bryce Thomas and Pine-Richland's Bennett Ferraro.
Wrestlers who saw their day end early included Butler's Gavin Rush at 152 pounds. He fell in the second round of consolations to Belle Vernon's Kole Doppelheuer, who managed an escape in the second period and won 1-0.
Seneca Valley's Zach Hill (139 pounds) and Riley Smith (107) both bowed from the tournament with losses to South Fayette's Talan Mizenko (major decision) and Moon's Bryce Thomas (fall), respectively, also in second-round consolation bouts.
