Mars bus driver involved in crash dies

The bus driver involved in the Thursday, March 6, bus crash on Three Degree Road has died.

Mars Area School District and A.J. Myers and Sons, Inc. transportation company announced William “Bob” Miller died in a letter posted on the district’s website at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13.

Miller was a bus driver at the district for 10 years, according to the letter.

“Bob was not only a dedicated and hardworking member of our community, but also someone who brightened the days of many with a kind word, a warm smile, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of those he served,” the letter said.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. on March 6, when the bus veered off Three Degree Road and drove into a tree. Seven students were transported to local hospitals, but were confirmed to have been discharged by later that afternoon. Miller was transported to Allegheny General Hospital following the crash.

“We understand that this news may bring up many emotions, and we encourage anyone in need of support to reach out to our community resources, including counseling services that are available for all,” the letter said.

At the time, the crash was called a “mass casualty” incident by first responders and prompted a significant response from emergency crews. No medical helicopters were called to the scene, but multiple ambulances were needed.
